February 22, 2025: This course, based in the scenic Mission Valley, offers a unique opportunity to explore the region’s winter raptors. Participants will embark on a guided tour, stopping at key locations to observe and identify various species of hawks, eagles, and falcons perched in their winter habitats. The course will focus on the behavior, identification, and ecology of these majestic birds of prey, providing hands-on learning in the field. With expert guidance, participants will develop a deeper understanding of raptor migration patterns, hunting strategies, and survival adaptations during the colder months.

Hike Overview Continued

February 22nd at 9 a.m.

This course, based in the scenic Mission Valley, offers a unique opportunity to explore the region’s winter raptors. Participants will embark on a guided tour, stopping at key locations to observe and identify various species of hawks, eagles, and falcons perched in their winter habitats. The course will focus on the behavior, identification, and ecology of these majestic birds of prey, providing hands-on learning in the field. With expert guidance, participants will develop a deeper understanding of raptor migration patterns, hunting strategies, and survival adaptations during the colder months.

Meeting Place: Columbia Falls Office, 7450 HWY 2 East. 

Itinerary: (subject to change due to trail closures and weather) After a brief introduction in our office in Columbia Falls we will have a presentation covering birding basics. We will then depart from the office and spend the rest of the day stopping at various locations in the Mission Valley, looking for raptors. The course will end by 3 p.m. and will not be canceled due to weather. 

Food:  Please bring a trail lunch, plenty of water, and snacks for the day. 

Equipment: You will receive a Field Camp gear list once you register. Most importantly are comfortable hiking shoes, at least 1-2 liter water bottle, backpack, snow gear and warm layers. Binoculars will be provided.

Physical Requirements: Easy. This course will primarily be driving to different locations in the Flathead Valley and getting out at a few spots.
