Hunting is a great way to get connected to the natural world, and we want to help educate new hunters on good practice techniques in hunting with conservation in mind. Join us to go over some reminders on safety in bear country, track identification, animal behavior, staying downwind, and staying quiet.

Instructors: Anthony Nelson and Riley Dennis

This class is designed for those that have already taken a Hunter’s Safety Certification course, but are still uncertain about how to go into the woods responsibly and successfully. Hunting is a great way to get connected to the natural world, and we want to help educate new hunters on good practice techniques in hunting with conservation in mind. Join us to go over some reminders on safety in bear country, track identification, animal behavior, staying downwind, and staying quiet. You’ll join Anthony Nelson, executive director for the Glacier Institute, and Riley Dennis, Program Director for the Glacier Institute, for a full day of education. Both Anthony and Riley have hunted their entire lives, and enjoy helping new hunters get started. Their combined expertise is sure to leave participants leaving much more prepared going into hunting season.

Meeting Place: Glacier Institute Big Creek.

Itinerary: (subject to change due to weather and trail closures)
8:00 – Classroom Introductions
9:00 – Trail walk around Big Creek
12:00 – Trail lunch
4:00 – Concluding thoughts and questions
5:00 – Dismissed

Food: Please bring a trail lunch, snacks, and plenty of water for the day.

Equipment: You will receive a gear list once you register. Most importantly are comfortable hiking shoes, at least 1-2 liter water bottle, backpack, rain gear, hat, and sunscreen. Weather can be varied with extremely high winds, especially in the higher elevations, so please be prepared with appropriate clothing, and extra layers. We recommend bringing binoculars, as well as the backpack you intend to hunt with. NO FIREARMS ARE ALLOWED ON CAMPUS, LEAVE THEM AT HOME.

Physical Requirements: Hiking distance will be between two to five miles.

What to Expect On Your Hunting Preparation Course

You’ll join Anthony Nelson, executive director for the Glacier Institute, and Riley Dennis, Program Director for the Glacier Institute, for a full day of education. Both Anthony and Riley have hunted their entire lives, and enjoy helping new hunters get started. Their combined expertise is sure to leave participants leaving much more prepared going into hunting season.

The Glacier Institute has a 7 day cancellation policy for a full refund with all of our courses.
