Description

Bear Safety Seminar
Instructor: Glacier Institute Staff
Thursdays in June, July, and August at 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

One of the major highlights of any trip out west is the opportunity to view a bear in its natural habitat. While these experiences can be incredibly exciting, it’s important to remember several key safety considerations while exploring bear country. This course will discuss the natural history of both black bears and grizzly bears. We will go into detail on bear behavior and discuss signs and indicators that a bear is getting agitated. We will also spend time explaining how and why bear spray is an effective and important tool to have with you while visiting the Flathead valley.

Meeting place: Glacier Institute Headquarters, 320 Nucleus Ave. Columbia Falls, MT

Itinerary (subject to slight change): We will begin the clinic with staff introductions and an explanation of the facility layout.

  • Bear biology and natural history
  • Bear behavior and indicators
  • Safety in the front country and backcountry, trip preparation
  • Proper bear spray deployment, demonstrations

Equipment: Please bring a 1-2 liter water bottle, a hat and sunglasses, as we will be outside. There is a small covered area in case rain is in the forecast.

Physical Requirements: This course will not require any intensive physical activity. It will be held in the park on the Glacier Institute’s headquarters location.
