SUMMARY:Art in the Heart of Glacier
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Sydney Boveng \nJune 14\, 2026 at 8am \nJoin local artist Sydney Boveng for a half-day art course in the breathtaking setting of Glacier National Park. This immersive experience includes a short hike through some of the park’s most scenic landscapes\, offering inspiration from its towering peaks\, alpine lakes\, and pristine wilderness. Sydney will be walking you through her process for creating expressive and playful plein air landscape sketches. Many people find drawing a scene outdoors intimidating\, and her goal is to help you break down some of the most common barriers people face when drawing outside. We’ll practice identifying and capturing your favorite elements of a scene\, letting go of perfection\, and exploring your own unique visual language.  \nThis hands-on class is designed for artists of all skill levels\, providing an opportunity to connect with nature\, develop artistic skills\, and create meaningful artwork in one of the most stunning national parks in the world. \nMeeting Place: Glacier Institute Field Camp  \nItinerary: (subject to change due to trail closures and weather) At 8 a.m. we will gather at Field Camp for introductions and short classroom session. We will take a short break\, then head into the field to a nearby location for our field studies. We will return to Field Camp by 1 p.m.  \nFood:  Please bring a trail lunch\, dinner\, plenty of water and snacks for the day. \nPark Entrance Fees: Participants are responsible for purchasing their park entry passes prior to the course. These can be purchased online at:  https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/74280. \nEquipment: You will receive a Field Camp gear list once you register. Most importantly are comfortable hiking shoes\, at least 1-2 liter water bottle\, backpack\, rain gear\, hat\, and sunscreen. Weather can be varied\, so please be prepared with appropriate clothing\, especially warm layers.  \nSome art supplies will be available to share. In order to be most successful in this course\, we recommend bringing the following materials: \n\ndrawing surface of their choice (sketchbook\, journal\, or just paper and a clipboard)\nline media: pens\, pencil\, colored pencils\nshape/thick mark media: crayons or pastels\, highlighters\, markers\, etc\numbrella\, if there is a chance of rain\n\nPhysical Requirements: Easy/moderate. We will hike approximately 2 miles with no more than 200 feet of elevation gain. \nRecommended Reading \n\nThe Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling by John Muir Laws\nWildflowers of Glacier National Park by Shannon Kimball and Peter Lesica

SUMMARY:Wildflower Workshop
DESCRIPTION:June 13 at 7 – 4 p.m. \nInstructor: Janet Paul Bones \nGlacier National Park is a wildflower aficionado’s paradise. With nearly 1\,000 species of wildflowers located within its boundaries\, Glacier provides an abundance of beauty and learning opportunities for those who know where to look. In this course\, participants will have the opportunity to identify plants in the diverse biomes of Glacier National Park. At the end of the class\, students should be able to identify many common wildflowers\, recognize at least seven plant families by sight\, list plant adaptations\, and be able to compare plant limiting factors for habitats that were viewed. The majority of the class will be taught as hands-on in the field in a non-technical manner. Botanical terms will be discussed as they are observed while identifying plants. Both common and scientific names as listed in Peter Lesica’s Flora of Glacier National Park\, 2002\, will be used. This course is for anyone who enjoys observing wildflowers and learning about plant adaptations which enable them to survive. \nMeeting Place: Glacier Institute Field Camp.  \nItinerary: (subject to change due to weather\, trail closures\, and blooming season) \nWe will meet at Field Camp at 7 a.m. for an introduction and orientation to the workshop. We will load into the Glacier Institute vehicles for a drive over to Sun Point along St. Mary Lake. From Sun Point we will walk along the St. Mary Falls trail as far as Baring Falls\, then up to the Sun Road at Sunrift Gorge. From here we will continue as far as time allows along the Siyeh Pass Trail before returning to the bus and back to camp by 4 p.m. The course will not be canceled due to weather.  \nFood: Please bring a trail lunch\, plenty of water\, and snacks for the day. \nPark Entrance Fees: Participants are responsible for purchasing their park entry passes prior to the course. These can be purchased online at:  https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/74280.   \nAcademic Credit: Please see our ‘2026 Academic Credit’ link on our website to learn about OPI credits for our courses. \nEquipment: You will receive a Field Camp gear list once you register. Most importantly are comfortable hiking shoes\, at least 1-2 liter water bottle\, backpack\, rain gear\, hat\, and sunscreen. Binoculars and hand lenses are also highly recommended. A simple identification key will be provided for use during the workshop as well as a variety of plant books. A small notebook is helpful as are any of your favorite plant identification books. Participants may wish to have a copy of Shannon Kimball’s Wildflowers of Glacier National Park and Surrounding Areas to use during the class. \nPhysical Requirements: Moderate: We will be hiking up to five miles round trip and up to 800 feet of elevation change. Frequent breaks will be taken along the trail. \nRecommended Reading:\n● Wildflowers of Glacier National Park and Surrounding Areas by Shannon Fitzpatrick Kimball and\nPeter Lesica
